Welcome to the
Breakaway Blog
A Note From Kristen
If you’re reading this, I would like to thank you for being a part of the Breakaway story. Every one of our colleagues, clients, friends, believers has had an important part of building this amazing community that supports small businesses and brings JOY to accounting, for both our clients and our advisors.
Just kidding! I'm doing taxes again!
A few short months (ok, it seems like several years) ago, I wrote a blog about Why I Don’t Do Tax Returns. In that article, I pointed out that accountants who do tax returns often have to choose between spending time getting a complete and accurate tax return completed and finding tax strategies for their clients, versus having a positive ongoing relationship.

Where tech meets humanity
From the day we founded Breakaway Bookkeeping & Advising we embraced technology. We even made it a pillar of business! The accounting, financial services, and bookkeeping industries have consistently been identified as ripe for technological disruption.
I'm Waking Up
This week’s protests and riots have been a wake-up call to America. They have also been a wake-up call to me. One of my favorite coping mechanisms is denial. Compartmentalization. Escaping from reality. But there is no escaping reality anymore. So I’ve been doing a deep dive on white privilege and taking a hard look at myself.

COVID-19: An Open Letter to Our Advisors
To our amazing advisors,
It’s hard to begin to describe what has been going through my head these past days and weeks as Covid-19 has moved into the forefront of the entire world’s consciousness. I wanted to share a few thoughts from our founding partners as each of us navigate through this unprecedented time. I am going to avoid the standard advice (wash your hands, don’t touch your face, maintain social distancing) and instead talk about how we can help take care of ourselves, our clients, and our community.
Why I Don't Do Tax Returns
I had my first tax season in 1994. That means I had about 25 tax seasons under my belt when we started Breakaway (give or take a couple years when I was in industry). For the most part, I actually enjoyed tax work. I got a chance to interact with my clients in a way that they valued (as long as I was giving them good news and ways to save money). I got to feel a sense of accomplishment when I could deliver a finished product on time to a client.
Breakaway Beginnings
One of our goals here at Breakaway is to support small business. Mainly we do this by providing monthly bookkeeping, goal setting, and advisory meetings with our clients as their guide on their business journey.
Bringing Joy To Accounting
I have been a CPA for over 20 years, and my partner recently diagnosed me with “battered accountant syndrome."
