#WhatMatters

When we founded Breakaway Bookkeeping & Advising, we knew that embracing diversity was a given. Because it is who we are as founders and as humans. Because it is #whatmatters.

During a planning retreat, we even scribbled down the simple phrase “They know me. I’m here.” as one of our core values. As a company, we said that we will always take the time to acknowledge and to celebrate the uniqueness of our team members. To make them feel welcome. To make them feel accepted. To make them feel loved.

But it isn’t enough. While well-intentioned, the phrase implies a sense of passivity, and passivity is not what our country needs right now. We need to do more than to see you. We need to do more than to merely acknowledge your presence. We need to do more than to just welcome you into our fold.

Being against racism and fighting for the elimination of racism are two different things. As an organization, we will speak out. Take action. Make clear that diversity can be a verb, not a noun.

Our company may be small but, in the words of Mother Teresa, “There are no great things. Only small things with great love.” We will listen. We will speak up. We will reach out. We will help where we can. And we won’t give up.
