Freelancing: Do What You Love

This is a departure from my standard “how-to freelance” blog. This is more evidence that freelancers can be successful anywhere in the world. While vacationing in the British Virgin Islands, our group ran into two of the most exciting freelancers. The first was the Rum Runner. This gentleman, Jim, and his cute dog (Drake) sell frozen drinks from boat to boat. The Rum Runner uses a unique device to make his cocktails. He has a limited but delicious menu of drinks. Given the number of friends sailing with us, we could sample all the drinks on the menu. The drinks were exciting and just what we needed on this particular day. The Rum Runner started his business a relatively short time ago. Like many looking for something fun and engaging, Jim intended to keep busy and make a little money. Little did he know that he would sell more than 15,000 drinks annually. More recently, he has added various types of apparel. He now spends most of his week running the business and loving every minute.

The second freelancer, Isah, is an artist that lives on the island of Jost Van Dyke. Isah is a very engaging gentleman who loves spending time with the people who visit the Bubby Bath on the island. Isah uses his unique artistic skills to beautify the island. Just off of the Bubby Bath path is a mural he did. He does a lot of murals on the island. If you love murals, you must spend time on this island. In proper artistic form, he makes bowls and other artistry that he sells to continue purchasing his supplies to beautify the island further. Isah does not live a life of luxury, but he is one of the happiest people I’ve met. This further proves that staying productive and doing what we like is a win-win.

These are just a few examples of individuals who enjoy what they do and make money doing it. Like most freelancers, it is difficult for them to tell you the hours that they spend on their craft. This being said, most freelancers agree that the hours accumulated become more manageable when you love what you do.

While most of us aren’t able to freelance in paradise, working for yourself doing something you love can offer a sense of fulfillment and freedom no matter where you are. If you’re looking to start or expand a business, having the right financial partner by your side can increase your chances of success.
