Seasoned Guides Make All the Difference

I am a girl who loves new adventures; so when I was invited to do a white water rafting trip on the White Salmon River, I jumped at the chance. We immediately began with a Class 3 rapid, which started the adrenaline early, and also got us into a rhythm of “Let’s do this” right away! Casey was our seasoned guide and he made the whole experience fun and safe. The river was not boring, as we seemed to always be approaching the next rapid. We even went over a 10 foot waterfall (Class 5) and I loved every minute! This was so much different from my last experience white water rafting, when we didn’t have an experienced guide like Casey and we hit rocks, flipped over, and overall had a much more difficult time on the river.

I compare this to the 2020 experience for small business owners. It is an adrenaline rush as we navigate the rapids and we keep getting hit with one after another. The demand for holistic advisors has provided an enormous opportunity for accountants because small business owners need seasoned advisors to help them prepare for the many varieties of rapids out there.

Just as my river guide Casey helped me to feel secure and prepared for the rapids, accountants are the guides in this current business environment. Accountants who have the resources to be advisors can help entrepreneurs shift business models and see new opportunities to secure revenue. Successful accountants don’t just focus on the numbers, but also see and understand the “people” side of the business.

Here are some of the key ways the accountants can provide higher value services to their clients:

  1. Teach business owners how to use technology in order to to disrupt stale processes and enable automation.

  2. Help clients to transform their mindset and see challenges and new opportunities to shift business models.

  3. Create a playbook for how to communicate with employees to help both employers and employees feel safe and informed.

  4. Seek partners to help you outsource the compliance work so that you can focus on quality time with your client. Gusto's People Advisory Program is a perfect example of a partnership that helps accountants become better advisors.
